N order to avoid recurring tragedies due to uprooting of trees and weak branches of many trees coming down, the Bangalore City Corporation (BCC) has taken up tree pruning on a large scale across the City .

In addition, tree census in all the 100 wards of the City has also been undertaken.

"W e have embarked upon the ’T ree Census’ with assistance from environmentalists and voluntary organisations. T ree counting has begun in Nagpura, Shantinagar and Shivajinagar wards. BCC is confident of completing the tree census in all the 100 wards before the onset of monsoon," said officials of BCC horticulture department.

So far , about 100 people have evinced interest in tree census. In the first phase, trees on either sides of the road will be counted, where age, breed and condition of trees would be ascertained. After assessment and analysis of the census report, the BCC horticulture department along with the BCC deputy conservator of forest, would decide upon further action.

MACHINERY TO PRUNE TREES : The BCC has purchased a crane to prune trees at a height of 25 to 35 ft. Udapudi said that the cables and advertising boards tied to trees will be removed. However , initially the trees situated in parks and government lands would not be considered.

MAYOR ’ S WARD IS LESS GREENER : Interestingly , of the three wards where tree census has been completed, Shivajinagar ward, represented by Mayor Mumtaz Begum has the least number of trees. The number of trees stands at 142. "Of the 142 trees only a few are healthy ," an official said.

Another interesting revelation is that the Shivajinagar ward does not have a huge park too.

U dapudi said that a modern technique would be employed to make Shivajinagar more greener .
