Bangalore: Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy on Thursday stressed his govt’s support to BMTC saying the city’s roads need not 25 but 100 ’V olvo City Buses’ to make public transport popular among private vehicle users.

Speaking after flagging off BMTC’s second V olvo route, K umaraswamy recommended an array of measures to public service utilities providers BMTC, BMP , BWSSB among others. Assuring that all infrastructure projects, including the M etro Rail project, will be taken up for faster implementation, he said the demands of state R TCs would also be looked into .

The CM also laid the foundation stone for a new multipurpose bus station at Jayanagar to be built at a cost of Rs 10 crore.

Earlier , T ransport Minister N Cheluvarayaswamy said that NEKRTC and NWKRTC are also in the process of becoming profit-making units.

BMTC managing director U pendra T ripathy said the corporation, which has made a profit of Rs 100 crore during the ’Suvarna Karnataka Y ear’, will constitute a ’BMTC Kannada Literature Award’ to be given to eminent persons in the field of Kannada literature from 2006-07 onwards. "The award will carry a cash prize of Rs five lakh.
