Tech hub Whitefield cries for basic amenities

Tech hub Whitefield cries for basic amenities
The Times of India

Whitefield: A suburb that has made its presence as an IT hub, a prime real estate area and a health destination, Whitefield, actually lacks basic amenities.

A look at all the real estate ads buying, selling apartments shows up
Whitefield as the next big thing.

Yet, roads, water supply and sanitation are still in the basic stage of installation. For instance, the BWSSB’s Greater Bangalore Water Supply and Sanitation Project (GBWASP) work, to provide Cauvery water and sanitation to the areas coming under the Mahadevapura CMC, has only just begun.

GBWASP’s work has stalled road laying works for over two years, where residents put up with hardship, the only respite being they would get drinking water facility, shortly. This apart, the road laying works undertaken by contractors at places where pipeline laying works have been completed, are found to be of a substandard quality.

According to the Mahadevapura CMC commissioner Chikkavenkatappa, but for the ongoing water and sanitation works, the municipal council would have gone ahead with the road laying works. “Once the BWSSB work gets completed, we will take up road laying works, and for this we have earmarked Rs 2.04 crore in the budget for the year 2006-07,’’ he said.

Without regular restrengthening work, the existing roads have also become deplorable due to the movement of heavily loaded trucks which carry huge quantity of construction material for multistoreyed buildings coming up in large numbers in the CMC.

To overcome the problem of irregular garbage collection, the CMC is planning to introduce outsourcing of door-to-door garbage collection which would be handed over to Stree Shakti Group. This would not only help in creating new jobs, but will also bring in revenue to the municipality as Rs 20 per house will be levied.

The area was inundated during last monsoon and the CMC has plans to desilt major valleys at a cost of Rs 2.04 crore.

“The CMC is responsible for providing basic amenities but is short of funds. The best way to tackle this is by merging the CMC and a TMC with the BMP so that loans could be availed through various financial institutions and development could be initiated.

“Connecting Whitefield-Varthur-Kodivillage-Bommasandra Circle Road is being taken up at a cost of Rs 18 crore.Work has begun on connecting the HAL-Kundalahalli-Whitefield Road. The construction of a 2-way bridge at Munikolalu has been approved.’’

BUDGET BYTES
Mahadevapura CMC budget was presented recently. Total outlay: Rs 31 crore. Basic amenities: Rs 6.76 crore; improving water supply Rs 2.80 crore. Education: 34 school buildings to be upgraded by spending Rs 1.3 crore.
