Rising pollution levels cause concern

POLLUTION is one of the most serious problems facing the country and Bangalore is no exception.
With pollution levels rising with every passing day , authorities are taking steps to control it. However , these steps don’t seem to be enough to control the increasing levels of pollution in the City .
Moreover , the action of some in certain areas causes the pollution levels to increase.
Cubbon Park proves to be one such place. As several people move inside the Cubbon Park daily , it is hard to maintain the ness of the park. However , the authorities their best to keep the park clean.
"There is one huge pith at Cubbon Park near the Hudson Circle and Kasturba Road crossing. Generally , we dump all the garbag there and burn it once in every three days said V enu Gopal, Deputy Director of Horticulture, Cubbon Park.
T alking about the rise in pollution caused by burning garbage, he said: "Generally , garbage is burnt either in the evenings or the early hours of the morning, when there are not many people around." But the problem lies in the fact that garbage is not limited to only dry leaves and stem Near the bamboo park, inorganic products like plastics, and polythene bags are burnt.
A senior officer of the Karnataka State Pollution Board said : "According to the solid waste and management handling rules, one is not permitted to burn inorganic wastes a well as plastics within the City . Only dry leaves and grasses can be burnt." Dr Ramesh Chowdhury , a general physician, said: "If the garbage comprises only grasses and dry leaves, it’s ok. But plastic and other inorganic components, when burnt, emit harmful gases. These add on to the chemical content in the air . When individuals inhale such gases, it affects their respirat systems , leading to lung diseases and asthma in the long run." Thus, it is high time that adequate care i taken to reduce such actions that lead to a rise in pollution.
