While the City sleeps, the chief minister and his deputy will have a night-out. They will check the state of civic amenities and infrastructure — roads, storm drains, public toilets, parks, markets, flyovers, streetlights and more. The night-out is only once a month though.
Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy on Monday promised this nocturnal care for Bangalore after a meeting with the heads of the civic agencies — BMP, BDA, BWSSB, BESCOM, and City Police. Deputy Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa was also present at the meeting.
“I do not want to inconvenience the public (by way of traffic jams) by holding day-time inspections. Once a month, we will go between 10 pm and 1 am,” Mr Kumaraswamy told the media. According to official sources, the chief minister has decided to wait for about four weeks before going on the first of these night-outs. The chief minister has reportedly ordered the officials to do everything to ensure the growth of ‘Brand Bangalore’ and attract investments. He also appealed for the public’s co-operation with the government, but did not commit on setting up any structured body to ensure public-private participation.
The following are among the instructions that were given to the officials and assurances made by the chief minister on Monday:
* Explore the possibility of setting up a co-ordinating committee to regulate the works of all the civic agencies.
* BDA told to take up on priority the concerns of people who have been employed in Bangalore for over three decades but have no house of their own.
* Action for improvement of basic facilities in the CMCs surrounding the BMP, which should also involve the concerns of the migrant workers.
* Completion of all on-going flyover projects within three or four months.
* Repair of all roads damaged during the last rains within two months.
* Traffic police told to prepare a report on traffic in next 15 days. The report must take note of accident-prone footpaths.
