Monday was the coldest night in Bangalore in the last 14 years. The temperature was as low as 7.8 degree celsius.

The temperature had dipped to this level in February 1992 last. The meteorologists attribute the fall in temperature to the heavy rains, which lashed the city last October.

Usually, December is the coldest month and the temperature increases after Makara Sankranti. This year, the normal trend has reversed. “The temperature is unlikely to improve for another two weeks. It is due to the moisture content in the air,” says Dr Raje Gowda, Director of Meteorological Department of University of Agricultural Sciences.

Due to the heavy downpour during October 1991 in Bangalore, the temperature fell during 1992.

The situation is not very different in other parts of the State like Gulbarga, Bijapur, Raichur, Bidar, Bagalkot and coastal areas. Kolar recorded a temperature of 7 degree celsius on Monday. “The cold wave is likely to continue in other parts of the State also,” says Dr A L Koppar, Director of Meteorological Department.

Dr Raje Gowda says that the prevailing climatic condition is bad for agriculture. The decline in temperature curtails the crop growth, he adds.
