Bangalore: The high court has directed the government to give a report in a month on steps taken by them to implement the Lakshman Rau Committee report and the several directions issued by the court in regard to the implementation of the committee report.

The court also allowed the construction of a link road as part of the Bangalore-Mysore Infrastructure Corridor over 5.39 acres of land on Hoskerehalli Lake in Bangalore south. The remaining portion of the 55 acre lake will be used to set up a tree park.

The court heard the contentions of Padmashree Jafar Futehalli, P D Gaonkar chief conservator of forest (retd), Lt Gen N S Narahari and renowned educationist late H Narasimhaiah who sought to preserve lakes and tanks. These petitioners had urged that the Lakshman Rau Committee recommendation in the case of this lake be followed.

The high court noted that there must be a balance between development and environment and the link road was essential for infrastructure development.

It may be recalled that N Laksman Rau, former BCC commissioner, submitted a report to the government in 1987 urging that they preserve the water bodies in the Bangalore Metropolitan Area.
