No Drive Against Tinted Glass For Now: Police
The Times of India
Bangalore: The Bangalore city police, who were all gung-ho about going after cars with dark tinted glass, put the gear in neutral mode on Friday stating: “There will be no drive against tinted glass from January 15.’’
Speaking to The Times of India, city police commissioner Ajai Kumar Singh’s oneliner was: “We will not launch any drive with regard to the tinted glass issue for now.’’
Asked why, the commissioner, without ascribing reasons, replied: “We have received different opinions from people on the issue, we will have to consider them.’’
The police had decided to implement Section 100 the Central Motor Vehicle Rules (1989) —- which says the visual transmission of light in vehicles should not be less than 70 per cent in the rear-screen and 50 per cent in the windows —- following the murder of a call centre employee and the IISc terrorist attack.
Setting January 15 as deadline for vehicle owners to strip down dark sun films, the police also conducted free light transmission tests on about 6,000 cars at two venues in the city.
However, with mounting protests from vehicle owners (especially women) against the move, chief minister N Dharam Singh on Wednesday said he would review the police move.
Though sources in the police admit that they decided to apply brakes following CM’s intervention, the top brass proclaimed they wanted to give some more time for vehicleusers.
To pointed question on whether cases will be booked against cars with dark glass from January 15, the commissioner retorted: “The rule has been there for years. How can I order my men to not implement the rule?’’
However, police officers said the rule will be confined to taxis initially.
“Before slapping cases against ownerdriven vehicles, we will educate the drivers on the dangers posed by dark sun films and persuade them to remove them,’’ an officer said.
While declining to set a new deadline, the officer said the free tests on tinted glass will continue for some more time.
