Mumtaz Begum inspects development works in Shantinagar and surrounding areas

BANGALORE: Mayor Mumtaz Begum on Monday directed the health officials in the Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BMP) to ensure that markets are cleaned up regularly, at least once a week.

She told presspersons after inspecting development works in Shantinagar and surrounding areas that all measures will be initiated to change the image of BMP markets.

She directed health officials to take up repairs wherever required and provide toilets and proper drainage system inside the market yards.

"I have instructed the officials to ensure that hygiene is maintained in the market yards, no matter even if we have to employ more health staff," she said.

The Mayor, who inspected the major storm water drain in Shantinagar, expressed displeasure over the diversion of sewage lines put up by the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB), into the drain.

She directed the Commissioner to speak to the BWSSB Chairman about such "bad practices" and ensure that storm water drains carry only rainwater.

The Mayor also inspected the drain flowing near the St. Michael Church, the Community Hall in Akkithimmanahalli and Johnson's Market in Richmond Town and directed the officials to work in coordination with other service providers to keep the city clean.

Deputy Mayor M. Lakshminarayana went around Richmond Town and inspected the Nandan playground.

He instructed the officials to remove unauthorised structures put up inside the playground and prepare a detailed plan for upgrading the playground. He also inspected developmental work carried out on Magrath Road.

Shantinagar corporator K Vasudevamurthy, Joint Commissioner (East) N. Jayaram and other senior officials accompanied the Mayor.

Grievance meet

A grievance redressal meet organised by the BMP for residents of eastern parts of Bangalore turned out to be a damp squib with not a single resident attending the meet.

The Mayor, who was present at the Mayo Hall, the venue of the meet, from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. returned without redressing any grievances.
