Bangalore, Jan. 1: The security system during the New Year revelry in the city was unobtrusive, though tight. This was the unanimous opinion of the cross section of the people.
"It was correct on the part of the police commissioner, Dr Ajai Kumar Singh to deploy so many policemen in the backdrop of terrorist threat but it was unobtrusive. I went with my family to M.G. Road, Brigade Road, Commercial Street and no where we encountered rude or unfriendly behaviour by the policemen. It means that the police chief had motivated his men down to the constabulary," said Mr S.N. Jayanth, a bank employee and a resident of Thyagarajanagar.
He also had a word of praise for Dr Singh for sending out SMS messages conveying to the people not to heed to rumours and that the city is safe. "I am touched by this gesture. It means he has taken a personal interest in the welfare of the people. May his tribe increase," said Mr Jayanth.
Ms Shahina, a teacher residing in Kadirenahalli Cross had a similar experience. She said, "I was coming back home from Tannery Road around 12.30 am. When I stopped the car in a few places due to traffic, some policemen asked me if I had any problem and if I had the telephone number of the police control room to complain in case of any eventuality. I was pleasantly surprised by this."
New Year revellers in Vijayanagar, Basaveshwaranagar, Chord Road, Dr Rajkumar Road, Malleshwaram, Gangenahalli and Sanjaynagar also had a word of praise for the city police.
Dr Singh and all senior officers patrolled the city. About 4,000 policemen including bomb disposal squads and quick reaction teams of both the city police and the Army were deployed.
