BANGALORE: The rainwater harvesting and artificial recharge project implemented under central sector scheme at Jnanabharathi campus is running smoothly, Bangalore University vice-chancellor M S Thimmappa said here on Friday.

“The entire campus is now using water through this project,” the VC said. The scheme is funded by Ministry of Water Resources through Central Ground Water Board (CGWB) and implemented jointly by CGWB and Bangalore University at a cost of Rs 45 lakh during 2001-’04.

“The surface run-off water available in the campus during the rainy season which otherwise goes as waste has been used for artificially recharging the aquifer in the campus,” BU vice chancellor M S Thimmappa said.

The scheme was implemented in two phases. Under phase I, three check dams were constructed and under phase II, two check dams and one vertical staff have been constructed. “The project is aimed at harnessing surface run -off available during the monsoon period to recharge the depleting aquifer system in the area instead of letting into the polluted Vrishabhavathi River,” VC explained.

The University along with CGWB has submitted a proposal of Rs 50 lakh to University Grants Commission for this project.
