Mayor Mumtaz Begum on Tuesday said that work on repair and development of Tannery Road in the city will begin within a week at an estimated cost of Rs 50 crore. It will be taken up under the World Bank-assisted road development works, she said.

The mayor, who was on an inspection tour, noted that leaking water pipes was among the major reasons for the sorry state of affairs on Tannery road. This has been repeatedly brought to the notice of Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB). The Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BMP) has even asked the BWSSB to deposit a sum of Rs 15 lakhs to the cost of repairs, she said.

Deevarajeevanahallli, Sagayipuram, Kadugondanahally and Kaval Byrasandra were the wards inspected by the mayor.

At Vinobhanagar, Ms Begum took note of the unauthorised occupation of the houses the BMP had build, through HUDCO’s assistance. The Assistant Revenue Officer was ordered to file a status report on the same. Mumtaz Begum also promised to make special arrangements for drinking water supply to Devarajeevanahalli till its long-drawn out pipeline laying work is through.

A part of the water supply pipeline to Devarajeevanahalli has to pass through Defence property and there is some bottleneck in addressing the issue, the mayor noted and said that supply through tankers will be arranged in the meanwhile.

Unhygenic living conditions especially in the Kuridoddi Doddanna Garden under Deevarajeevanahlli also attracted the mayor’s wrath. Health officials were directed to act against the unauthorised tanning units in the area.
