Nearly 200 residents of J P Nagar III Stage staged a rasta roko for over two hours on Thursday morning, protesting against diversion of heavy vehicles on to residential road stretches.

According to residents, the 20 feet road, which runs through a residential locality, had turned into a congested two-way after 2nd Main on JP Nagar III Phase was made into a one-way three months ago. They lamented that nearly 10,000 vehicles, including heavy trucks, pass through this stretch that connects J P Nagar and Bannerghatta Road, everyday.

The residents complained about the noise and dust pollution caused by the seamless traffic. There have also been several accidents, many involving children, they add. “This road has several schools, including Ramanashree School for the Blind and St Paul School. The traffic is proving risky to the students also,” said Shakir, a resident. Traffic police officials, who met the protestors, assured that heavy vehicles will be banned on this stretch. Later, when contacted, Shakir said heavy vehicles were back on the road at 4 pm.

“We will watch for a few days. If there is no action, we will intensify our protest,” the resident said.
