Four more flyovers in city

Four more flyovers in city

BANGALORE: Driving through Sarjapur Road or the Majestic area may soon become easier, especially if the Bangalore Development Authority has its way.

It has decided to build four new flyovers in the city. Two of these will come up on the Sarjapur-Hitech City Road, one each will come up in the Majestic area and Trinity Circle.

Delay

Taking a cue from its poor experiences in building concrete flyovers — several of its projects, including the one on Airport Road, Trinity Circle, and Ananda Rao Circle, have been delayed by over four months because of rain and problems with the contractors — the BDA has decided to go in for steel flyovers this time.

Steel blocks

The BDA hopes that by using prefabricated steel blocks it can minimise the time needed for construction and can complete the project early next year.

Civil engineers say that prefabricated steel flyovers offer a quick and clean option with the minimum of disruption to traffic.

"Building this kind of flyover does not take too much space nor does it kick up too much dust," says A. Thirumavalavan, a civil engineer.

With steel, he adds, the need for foundation is minimised and even the superstructure is lighter. "It is easy and saves time," he adds.

Tenders for construction of these flyovers will be issued early next week, said the BDA Commissioner M.N. Vidyashankar.

So, 4 more main roads are going to be blocked for 2+ more years with traffic jam spillovers into arterial roads, and dust and all-round inconvenience for all concerned (except of course for our duly elected "public servants" and their huge contract kickbacks). Way to go Bangalore!
