Bangalore: Noting that autorickshaws are a major contributor to the City’s pollution levels, T ransport Commissioner Om Prakash said all 80,000 autorickshaws should convert to LPG before the July 2006 deadline. LPG retrofitted kits are one way of bringing down these levels." Addressing the gathering of about 3000 autorickshaw drivers, noted environmentalist Suresh Heblikar urged them to have their vehicles checked for pollution and refrain from the use of adulterated oil.

I salute Mr.Om Prakash for at least addressing this issue. It is rare for an administrator to risk irritating a political vote bank, by telling the the truth.

While a majority of auto drivers are normal, decent citizens, who are doing a tough, necessary job, there remains a huge number of them who are nothing better than thugs, with total disregard for road rules, decent behaviour and even criminal laws.

Here's hoping that the Transport Commissioner and his staff can do something to clean up the Autorickshaw image.
