Rainfall best in 5 yrs: weatherman

Rainfall best in 5 yrs: weatherman
The Times of India

Bangalore: Like always, rain took the Bangaloreans by surprise on Friday morning. The smiling sun gave way to widespread clouds and it rained 8.1 mm between 8.30 am and 5.30 pm. Between Thursday night and Friday morning, the city recorded 32 mm rainfall.

The weatherman says the rain was the result of cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal, particularly the western central and south western bay of North Tamil Nadu and South Andhra Pradesh coast.

“The cyclonic circulation was up to 6 km in the vertical direction and this resulted in rain, said A L Koppar, director, Indian Meteorological Department.

Over all for the city, 2005 has been a year of good rainfall. While the city’s average rainfall is 970 mm, records till date already shows 780 mm. More rainy days are expected in the next few months and Bangalore will exceed the average rainfall and would probably have the best that it had in the past five years, he says. The CMC areas were relieved — thankfully with no water logging. Said A K Gupta, a resident of Bomanahalli, “When the showers did not stop for a while, we were frantic, but there was no water logging. It was our lucky day.’’

No rain-related complaints: Friday’s raindid not cause any reported damage. At Shivajinagar, a section of a building which collapsed last week, remained stable.
