Get down to business, bypass CBD

Get down to business, bypass CBD
Deccan Herald

Motorists need not enter the CBD area such as MG Road, Cubbon Road, GPO junction and can use the CRR to reach various destinations.

Pedestrian subways and foot over bridges and construction of 15-20 mini-flyovers/vehicle subways on the proposed Core Ring Road (CRR) will ensure that there is smooth flow of traffic on the CRR.

The CRR project is being taken up to reduce traffic congestion on the roads in the Central Business District (CBD) of Bangalore. This does not mean that vehicles, including private cars and motorcycles will not be allowed in the CBD, Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic and Security) K V R Tagore told Deccan Herald. There will be no right turns, U-turns and signals on the CRR, he added.

The CRR is not a new road. We have identified certain existing roads, which will be upgraded to four-lane from the present two-lane. Only 20 per cent land needs to be acquired for taking up widening, he said. The 25-km CRR covers Mekhri Circle, C V Raman Road, Yeshwanthpur Circle, Dr Rajkumar Road, Magadi Road junction, Sirsi Circle, Makkala Koota, Minerva Circle, Lalbagh main gate, Mari Gowda Road, Bangalore Diary Circle, Anepalya junction, Hosur Road, part of Richmond Road, Trinity Circle, Ulsoor Tank Bund Road, Frazer Town and Jayamahal Road.

Once the CRR is completed, motorists need not enter the CBD area such as M G Road, Cubbon Road, GPO junction at all. They can instead use the CRR to reach their destinations, he said. The long term objective is to encourage people to use public transport. Dedicated lanes will be set up on the CRR, he added.

Suppose a motorist wants to reach City Railway Station from Ulsoor on CRR, he will have to take the Trinity Circle junction, Richmond road, Anepalya Junction, Bangalore Dairy Circle to Lalbagh main gate, M H Mari Gowda road, Minerva Circle, Makkala Koota to Magadi Road junction and Khoday Circle. Though its a slightly long route, the motorist can save 50 per cent time using the CRR. There will not be any stoppages along the 25-km stretch, he said.

Mini-flyovers will be set up at all key junctions along the proposed CRR to facilitate smooth vehicular movement, he added.

Mr Tagore said that detailed project report on the CRR is under preparation.

The State will seek Central assistance under the National Urban Renewal Mission, he said.

The Bangalore Mahanagara Palike will be executing the project, he added.
