BANGALORE: Chief Minister N. Dharam Singh will inaugurate the four-lane 405.30-metre National College flyover in Basavanagudi on Tuesday.
The project, built at a cost of Rs. 7.99 crores, will help motorists of Basavanagudi, Banashankari, Jayanagar, Vishveswarapuram, Hanumanthanagar, Srinagar, Padmanabhanagar and Girinagar reach their destinations fast. It will ensure disciplined traffic movement and reduce congestion on the K.R. Road running beneath the flyover. Vehicles going towards Lalbagh West Gate and those going towards V.V. Puram can use the flyover.
According to Basavanagudi MLA K. Chandrashekar, the flyover will carry 48 per cent of the existing traffic at the National College junction and also help in smooth movement of vehicles.
The project, which has been designed keeping in mind the traffic flow in the next 20 years, will reduce waiting time at the junction and save over Rs. 2 crores in terms of fuel and time in the first year itself.
The project, which began in September 2003, ran into trouble with groups of residents and environmentalists protesting that apart from the felling of trees, the flyover will change the quiet atmosphere of the neighbourhood.
Though originally scheduled to be completed by January 2005, work was delayed because of various technical reasons and the lorry strike earlier this year. This apart, the litigation by groups opposed to the flyover had also delayed construction.
