Futuristic plans for better traffic

Futuristic plans for better traffic
The Times of India

• Imagine a display board at a traffic junction giving details on volume of vehicles in the vicinity, allowing you to choose a less congested route to your destination.
• A traffic signal at Yeshwanthpur or Banaswadi can be controlled from a central control room, say from Infantry Road, depending number of vehicles on those roads.

These are among other future plans of the traffic police discussed at an interactive session with additional commissioner of police K.V.R. Tagore by the Federation of Karnataka Chambers of Commerce and Industry on Tuesday.

The officer said there can be road embedded sensors to monitor the number of vehicles. This would be interlinked to traffic signals and a centralised control room, from where the personnel can control the vehicle movement.

“The process has begun with some intelligent regulation systems put in places like the outer ring road,’’ he said, in reply to a query by a member of the audience on how long the police would take to execute their plans. Display boards at traffic junctions which allow motorists to choose a less congested route has been another ambitious project.

The flipside of these is, however, an acute shortage of personnel. The 38,000 intersections in the city are manned by 1,350 personnel while many more are required to handle the burgeoning traffic on city roads. Modern gadgets like simputers have led to better enforcement of rules, Tagore added.
