Coming near your homes are more RTO offices

Bangalore: Suburban Bangaloreans can now get driving licences at RTO offices nearer home.

RTO offices across the city will be redrawn in two months’ time. Residents of Yelahanka (north) who had to travel all the way to Yeshwantpur will have an office in their neighbourhood. Residents of Peenya (north-west) who had to travel to Rajajinagar can now visit an office in Peenya. Those in Bannerghatta (south) who had to travel to Jayanagar will now have an office on Bannerghatta Road. The residents of Rajarajeshwarinagar (south-west) and K.R. Puram (east) too will enjoy similar privilege — an RTO office in their area.

B.L. Sridhar, principal secretary, transport, said: “The number of people visiting RTO offices are about 700 every day. This number is very large and much higher than the optimum load they are equipped to take. By redrawing the jurisdictions we hope to rationalise jurisdictions and provide better delivery of services.’’

The government in an order dated June 6 acknowledged that people were being put to hardship because of the distance. These new jurisdictions are drawn keeping in mind the future growth of Bangalore city.

For example: A single RTO office issues 250 learner licences, 150 drivinglicences, registers 150 new vehicles, issues fitness certificates to about 100 vehicles, issues transfer of ownership documents to about 30 vehicles, renews about 30 driving licences and about 30 enforcement cases. About 1000-1500 files are disposed of every day.

Transport commissioner Om Prakash said: “The government order is ready and we are prepared to start offices here soon. The people will benefit because the offices will be nearer home and staff will have lesser work.’’

Trial runs at these new offices will begin as soon as offices are located. Sridhar said: “We are scouting for offices which will be rented at rates prescribed by PWD in these new locations. Our staff are ready.’’

The RTO offices will serve the following areas.

Yelahanka: Yelahanka, New Town, KHB, Judicial Layout, Jakkur, Sahakarnagar, Kodigenahalli, Vidyaranyapura, Mother Dairy, Arkavathy Layout and surrounding areas.

This information is outdated. Eg. Bannerghetta RTO is now renamed Electronic City and is actually located off Hosur Road (central jail road) and does not have juridiction over Bannerghetta Road.
