BANGALORE: The Airports Authority of India (AAI) has proposed various developmental plans for the city’s HAL Airport, which include upgrading the parking space and luggage system besides an increase in the number of check-in-counters.

The work, however, is still in the initial stages. Expansion work is expected to commence in June and will be completed by December, airport sources told this website’s newspaper.

The bids would be floated this month, they added.

‘‘Our plan is to provide more space at the airport lounges especially for international passengers. Airconditioning of international departure lobby is the highlight,’’ said an official.

The expansion would ease the burden at the luggage counters. According to the plans, the entire process of scanning the luggage would take place on the ground floor.

Outside the terminal, parking space will be doubled by introducing the multilayer parking system. This would facilitate parking of 1,000 cars in the airport instead of 500, officials said.

AAI will also introduce new counters in view of long queues at the check-in counters on the international departure floor. This would mean another eight counters in addition to the existing 11.
