BANGALORE: Four new bus terminal complexes on the lines of the recently inaugurated Shantinagar terminus would be constructed in the city, Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) managing director Upendra Tripathy announced on Friday.
At the inauguration of the BMTC call centre here, Tripathy said the terminals would come up at Jayanagar, Yeshwantpur, Kengeri and Domlur.
The Bangalore City Corporation (BCC) would also be consulted for acquiring land to expand these bus stands, he added.
The number of platforms will be increased to accommodate more buses.
An initial budget of Rs. 25 crore for the projects has been allocated for this year.
Work on the four terminals would begin soon and at least 25 percent of the civil works would be completed this year, he assured.
LOW FLOOR, AUTOMATIC, ENVIRONMENT-FRIENDLY VOLVO BUSES: BMTC will introduce 25 low-floor, gearless buses prescribing to Euro III environment norms in the city within the next six months, Tripathy announced.
These public transport buses made by Volvo, would be introduced in the country for the first time, he added.
The airconditioned buses would be designed for the convenience of senior citizens and the disabled, Tripathy said.
The State Government has released funds of Rs. 15 crore to procure the buses, each of which costs Rs. 65 lakh.
European technicians would visit the city to help with bus body-building and other technical aspects, he said.
SCHOOLS AWARDED FOR USING BMTC BUSES: BMTC recognised 30 schools in the city for using BMTC buses to ferry children, thus reducing traffic congestion during peak hours.
The schools which were awarded include Kumarans, VNS School (Ullal), Shantiniketan and Sophias School. The 30 schools had together hired 160 BMTC buses, he said.
BMTC also distributed driving licences to 149 trained Scheduled Caste (SC) and Scheduled Tribe (ST) members on the occasion.
