Bangalore: Some of the most sought after localities such as Koramangala and J P Nagar have been turning out to be scary places for many of the techies and students, who have ended up as soft targets for miscreants. If the increasing number of incidents like mugging or being held at knife-point to be relieved of your valuables are any pointer towards the state of affairs, these areas appear to be far from safe, say a number of residents. Citing some of the recent incidents reported from these areas, they demanded stern measures to protect them.
A group of six miscreants posing as central crime branch officials in search of drug abusers barged into JP Nagar located flat of Koushik Mandal and Johny and robbed them of Rs 4,000, a television set and a mobile phone at knife-point. They left after ransacking their house. Yadav G Kumar, waiting in his car for his friends to return from a nearby shop on 9th lane in Koramangala almost fell victim to three miscreants armed with swords and knives. The culprits travelling in an autorikshaw deliberately rammed their vehicle into his car to rake up an argument. They were about to flee with his valuables which they had collected after terrorising him with their weapons when two of them, Babu and Feroz, were nabbed with the timely return of friends and handed over to J P Nagar police. Their accomplice, Dattatreya is still at large. The accused are habitual offenders who were arrested on similar charges and released on bail recently.
An unidentified miscreant robbed a techie of her hand bag in Koramangala on Thursday. Ruchi Chandra, an employee of Wipro, was returning home from work when the miscreants snatched her bag containing her IDcard, credit and debit cards and some cash. A case has been registered with the Koramangala police. In a similar incident, a miscreant escaped after snatching a hand bag containing two mobile phones and some cash from a student in BTM Layout on Thursday. The victim, Seema Sharma, was with her sister when the incident occurred. An identified miscreant robbed a gold chain worth Rs 16,000 from a man who was sleeping in his house next to an open window. The victim, Lakshman, a resident of Lakklasandra has filed a complaint with the Adugodi police.
S Joseph, mother of techie daughter and resident of BTM layout says, '' It is becoming traumatic day by day. My daughter returns about 7.30 pm and I call her up almost twice every day to find out if she is alright. After sunset no one even comes to your rescue when one is being mugged.'' However, the police officials brush aside the alleged increase in such cases while mentioning that most of them involve techies and youth who prefer not to report the matter to the police. Citing manpower constraints in manning vast areas of around (10 sq kms) under their jurisdiction, they suggest preventive measures like abstaining from wearing jewellery and carrying huge amounts of cash while travelling alone during nights.
