Deccan Herald

The BMP has been carrying on with the tree-felling drive not withstanding the protest and police complaints by environmental activists. Overnight operations seems to be in progress.

A tree on Residency Road which was saved from felling on Thursday the activists stood protest, was found felled on Friday morning.

When contacted a Bangalore East Police Officer saw no point in the activists objection.

"The tree-felling is a follow up to the road widening exercise undertaken recently. The trees were left as it is then. Some of them jut almost 10 ft to 14 ft into the widened roads and are an obstruction to traffic flow," he said.

The BMP is the nodal agency in the exercise, they have followed all the relevant procedures, he said. According a letter by BMP Horticulture Officer dated April 7 addressed to Station House Officer, Ashok Nagar Police Station 8 trees on MG Road, ten trees on Residency Road andsix trees on Brigade Road are marked for felling and the BMP has authorised contractor R Shekar to carry out the task.
