Bangalore: Energy Minister H D Revanna on Friday announced a tranche of Rs 1,000 crore for upgrading the power sector in the City, to bring it on par with international standards within the next five years.
Speaking after the launch of the Bangalore Electricity Company (Bescom) Efficient Lighting Programme (BELP), Revanna said the transmission and distribution loss in power in the City stood at 9.6 per cent, which was the lowest when compared to other cities in the country.

Presently, Bangalore consumes 1,300 Mega Watt of power. However, by the year 2011 the energy consumption of the City is expected to double. And the Rs 1,000 crore allotted to bring the City at par with international standards would be used to meet the 2,600 MW demand in the next six years.

Revanna claimed that for the last two years there had been no failure in distribution transformers in the City.
Bringing the City at par with international standards would entail ensuring that citizens get uninterrupted power supply, experts said, adding that a city like Mumbai had already achieved such high standards.
Though Bangalore has a burgeoning population, is the IT centre of the nation and is home to several defence and scientific establishments, it also, ironically, experiences frequent power interruptions, posing inconvenience to the citizens.
