From where do these senseless ideas emerge?

The former Commissioner of the BMP and present MD of KSRTC, MR Sreenivasamurthy wants the wall around Lalbagh to be pulled down and replaced with metal grills.

Mr Murthy also proposed landscaping of all available space along storm water drains running across the city to add to the beauty.

He said the compound wall being built around the Lalbagh garden needed to be pulled down in order to improve the aesthetics of the famous botanical garden.

Mr Murthy, who was earlier the Bangalore Mahanagra Palike (BMP) commissioner, said the BMP had made a budgetary provision of Rs 1 crore to replace the existing concrete walls with ornamental grill on the lines of Vidhana Soudha. He said the practice of building compound wall around a structure is against landscaping norms and the trend should be done away with.

“There is a sort of obsession among the public to build compound walls which actually distorts the natural beauty in the ambience,” he opined.

This is the surest way of killing one of our largest lung spaces. Even with the wall and barbed wire fence on top of it, people from surrounding slums scale the walls and use Lalbagh as a public toilet. If the walls are pulled down you can be rest assured that it would give free entry to all kinds of anti-social elements, stray dogs and noxious fumes.
