Flyovers being wasted

Flyovers being wasted, says Test chairman

VIJAY TIMES NEWS

Bangalore: The Traffic Engineers Safety Trainers (Test) has questioned the logic behind installing signal lights on City flyovers saying it defeats the very purpose of constructing them.

Test Chairman, M N Sreehari, says flyovers are built for the smooth traffic movement, without any obstacles such as road humps and traffic signals.

Though it is the duty of the traffic police to leave no stones unturned to ensure smooth traffic flow on the flyovers, "nowhere in the world can one find manual or automatic controlling of traffic on flyovers," he said.
Sreehari said the newly introduced one-way system on these two flyovers has succeeded as is the belief of the traffic police. "It is like a litmus test for the traffic police, but the effectiveness of the one-way system introduced on a pilot project would be known in a month," he said.

He also suggested stringent curbs on slow-moving vehicles (below 30 km per hour) must be laid on flyovers, while preventing them from overspeeding at the same time.

He said that before shifting on to alternative method, the pros and cons of the plans had to be analysed.
"The concept of one-way is a temporary solution to solve traffic congestion and comprehensive technical planning has to go into it," he added.
