Sewage plant construction in Cubbon Park revived

Some members of the public recently observed hectic construction activity underway within Cubbon Park, on the side facing Kanteerava Stadium. Shanties to house the construction workers have also come up on the premises of the Cubbon Park. Upon their enquiring with the office of the Forest Department located within the park, it was learnt that the BDA has revived the construction of a sewage treatment plant. When this was brought to the notice of the Environment Support Group it was further learnt that this was a project originally proposed in 1997 and funded by a Danish aid agency. The Parks Act does not permit a water treatment facility in such environs and it amounts to a land use change. The project was halted in the wake of the campaign in 1997-1998 to protest the denotification of 40 acres of Cubbon Park.
