BANGALORE: At least a dozen trees on Hosur Road have been chopped by Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) to widen the narrow stretch of road near Forum Mall.

BBMP officials said the trees had to be cut to widen the narrow stretch of Hosur Road from Robert Bosch Engineering and Business Solutions Office to the Madiwala police station.

“We have taken up widening of the road. Hence, we cut the trees. Now, we have received orders to stop cutting of the trees,” said a BBMP official.

The BBMP had proposed to widen a stretch of 1.2 km of Hosur Road from about 20 metres to 30 metres.

Residents of Adugodi, who witnessed the BBMP personnel bringing down the trees on Friday and Saturday night, told The Hindu that widening of the road may be necessary. “But, the authorities should clear the felled trees, logs and branches,” said a shopkeeper Nagaraju.

The residents even complained of disruption in power supply due to the chopping down of trees.

The Telecom Department too had deployed its personnel to lay fresh underground cable to facilitate the road widening.

A pan-beeda seller Lakshman pointed out that the stretch of the road taken up for widening was indeed too narrow.

“The density of traffic on this road is too high. It will difficult for pedestrians, particularly children, to cross the road near the traffic junction,” he said.
