The first automated driving test track in the country will be inaugurated in the City in July this year.

The track meant for issuing driving licences for drivers of two-wheelers and four-wheelers, is totally computerised and helps counter menace of middlemen in RTO offices.

Transport Minister R Ashok, on Tuesday said, the Transport Department had sought Union Minister for Surface Transport Kamal Nath to inaugurate the track laid at Mallathalli, near Jnana Bharati campus, on July 16.

The track had been laid at a cost of Rs 1.7 crore. The Centre had provided assistance of
Rs 1.2 crore for the project and the State spent the rest Rs 50 lakh. The minister said that sensors had been installed along the track to detect mistakes committed by drivers or riders during the test.

Each candidate undergoing the test would be assessed by the score he secures while driving on the track and a test on traffic signals will be followed. Every candidate has to answer 25 questions related to traffic signals in a computerised kiosk. Soon after completing the test, the candidates would get marks sheet. Based on the marks sheet they would get smart cards of driving licence.

Ashok said the department would lay similar track across the State in the coming days. Once the system was in place everywhere, issuing licences will be foolproof and will help in minimising the number of accidents, he said.
