Mayor goes around, skips Tagore Circle

Encroached government lands in Banashankari shock NATARAJ

Mayor SK Nataraj went on a morning inspection tour of development, and not controversial, projects on Wednesday. This was evident when he skipped Basavanagudi's Tagore Circle underpass, work on which has had residents up in arms.
The recently elected mayor seems have taken upon himself the task of monitoring projects undertaken by the BBMP, with the intention of ensuring that they are of international standards.
He covered most of the projects in Basavanagudi area but steered clear of Tagore Circle. The locals have been protesting against the construction of the underpass at the mouth of Gandhibazaar, calling it an unwarranted project. In fact, some well-known names have lent their voice to the protest.
At 8.40 am, Nataraj, accompanied by BBMP commissioner Bharat Lal Meena, set out to the NR Colony maternity hospital. It is being transformed into a multi-specialty hospital at a budget of Rs2 crore, informed local MLA Ravi Subramanya, who joined the mayor's entourage at NR Colony.
Nataraj then travelled to Thyagarajanagar and the playground in Chennammanakere Achchukattu area, which is being developed at a cost of Rs3.5 crore. The ground will be equipped with skating, badminton and volleyball facilities and also a walking track. At Hosakerehalli, the mayor ordered that the desilting work of a storm water drain be speeded up. He was shocked by the encroachments on government lands at Banashankari — an issue that might make him sit on needles for the rest of his term, as such encroachments are rampant in the city.
