10 roads will be axes of city development

The future of Bangalore will take shape around 10 major roads. A path-breaking decision in this regard was taken at a high-level meeting on Tuesday.
Speaking to DNA after the meeting, Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) commissioner H Siddaiah said that these roads had been identified for comprehensive improvement, which included providing seamless connectivity, road widening, provision of proper footpaths and dedicated bus lanes.
Explaining the rationale behind the plan, ABIDe member Ashwin Mahesh said that these roads had been identified based on direction and mobility.
They will act as a grid and the city will grow around it. This kind of development is called Transit Oriented Development or TOD, and has been implemented in other parts of the world. Work on these roads will be completed in three years.
The roads that have been identified for rapid development are Bannerghatta Road, Bellary Road, Tumkur Road, Magadi Road, Sarjapura Road, Old Madras Road, Mysore Road, Kanakapura Road, HAL Airport Road and Hosur Road.
Meanwhile, 40 multi-level car parking centres will come up in the city. Of these, 20 parking lots will be constructed at the 10 arterial roads, and the remaining will come up in commercial areas like Jayanagar 4th Block, KR Market, Russel Market and Malleswaram. The areas will be finalised based on traffic volume, density and space availability.
A decision on whether the development should be under public-private partnership or any other mode will be taken after a meeting with stake holders.
In the recent budget, the BDA was given the task to develop 10 major roads and construct multi-level car parking with a budget of Rs1,000 crore. "While in principle the government has given the green signal for the project, work will commence once detailed project reports are prepared, Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) hands over the roads to us, and the government clears the proposal," said Siddaiah.
The plan was finalised at a meeting attended by Ashwin Mahesh, Siddaiah, additional commissioner of police (traffic) Praveen Sood, BBMP commissioner Bharat Lal Meena, and the chief minister's advisor A Ravindranath.
