State vouches for war memorial
Odeal D'Souza. Bangalore
The national war memorial proposed to come up in the Indira Gandhi Musical Fountain park would be used for motivational purposes, and not for commercial activities, the state government submitted before the Karnataka high court on Monday.
In its objections to the PIL filed by Krishna Apartment Welfare Association, the state said that an underground motivational hall spread over 11,000 sq ft would come up at the park for which only four trees would be cut.
The government said that it had constituted the National War Memorial Trust to oversee the construction work, and promised to give Rs3 crore every year for the trust. The National Military Memorial Trust submitted that the memorial comprises a 60-foot monolithic stone, a 120-foot flag pole, a band stand and an exhibition arena for war material, besides the motivational hall.
The court adjourned the matter to Thursday and extended the interim stay on felling of trees at the park till then.
