In a move that could have far-reaching ramifications, Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa announced on Monday that he was returning 3,000 acres of notified land to farmers while admitting that successive governments had notified more land than necessary for the Bangalore-Mysore Infrastructure Corridor ( B M I C ) Project.
"During scrutiny, we discovered that the Janata Dal government had notified 23,845 acres of land on October 14, 1998. My government will give only 20,193 acres as per the framework agreement. Since the previous government had notified additional land, our government will return it to farmers," he said.

The statement, made on the eve of BBMP polls, takes the wind out of the sails of Janata Dal (S) supremo H.D. Deve Gowda who started an agitation against the NICE project a month ago and flew farmers to New Delhi in a bid to up the ante on the controversial project.
