The State government in view of the upcoming BBMP elections, has extended Class ‘A’ status to the entire Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike area with effect from October 1, 2009.

With this, the HRA for all Government employees working in the BBMP limits will go up by 5 per cent. However, the employees will get arrears towards the enhanced HRA only for four months -- from October 2009. Around 1 lakh Government employees will be benefit from this decision.

The Government had increased the HRA for all Government employees from April 1, 2009 -- 20 pc in Class A, 15 pc in B, 9 pc in C, 6 pc in D and 5 pc in E cities. The jurisdiction of Class ‘A’ status of Bangalore was confined to only 8 km radius of the erstwhile BMP. Despite forming BBMP, after merging erstwhile seven CMCs, one TMC and 110 villages, in 2007, the Department of Personnel and Administrative Reforms (DPAR) had not extended the Class ‘A’ status to entire BBMP.

The State Government Employees’ Federation has decided to stage a protest in front of MS Building on Tuesday, demanding that the Government should give the HRA on par with Central Government employees. The Centre Government is giving 30 pc HRA.
