BANGALORE: Popular environmentalist and Chairman of Lake Development Advisory Committee, Bangalore Development Authority (BDA), A N Yellappa Reddy said that they would request the state government to issue notification on protection of lakes and to declare big lakes as state heritage lakes.
While inspecting the 12 lakes, which are being developed by BDA, Reddy said that the notification enables the concerned authorities to file criminal cases against those who pollute lakes by discharging effluents, sewerage and dump debris into the lakes.
He said that the wetlands around the lakes should be protected as they absorb heavy metals in the water that flows into the lakes.
Wetlands at Byramangala lake near Bidadi, Bellandur lake, Varthur and Madiwala lakes would be declared as state heritage wetlands of Bengaluru.
Deputy Conservator of Forest, BDA, Amarnath M V said that the restoration work on eleven lakes allotted to it are underway and should be complete by the end of March.
However, the work on Ramasandra lake might take some more time to be completed.
While inspecting the Rachenahalli lake Reddy directed the Project Management Consultants to take note of the apartments around the lake and to find out if they have constructed sewerage treatment plants.
