Bangalore: How do you want the Bengaluru International Airport to look like?
If you are an architecture student, you can now send your suggestions to the BIAL authorities. If they find them feasible, your ideas might shape the design of Bangalore’s expanding airport.
In a programme introduced by the BIAL called VisionAir, an Indian airport, for the first time ever, has opened its doors to ideas, thoughts and suggestions from local next-generation architects.
Students from leading architecture colleges in the city — BMS College Of Engineering, Dayananda Sagar College Of Engineering, MS Ramaiah Institute Of Technology, RV College Of Engineering, University Visvesvaraya College of Engineering and Acharya Institutes — will compete to produce the best design.
EXPANSION IS ONGOING PROCESS
The task is to produce a design for the 35 acres of public space in front of the terminal. Since expansion of the airport will be an ongoing process, students will have to think much in advance to come up with an useful and aesthetic proposition. They will also have to take into consideration present needs of the airport.
In mid-November, BIAL authorities visited these colleges, explaining to them its state-of-the-art infrastructure. The authorities have since then received applications from over 200 students.
Students will have to submit the skeleton ideas on December 15. The finalists from this round will appear before jury with the full sketch in January.
GIVING FINAL SHAPE
However, the winner’s idea will be replicated only if it is found feasible for the airport. “Airport is a complicated structure. There are many things that are to be taken care of while designing it. If the idea is suitable, we would definitely consider it,” said a BIAL spokesperson.
Apart from this, the winner’s propositions will be displayed to the 6,000 employees of the airport and to passengers in the terminal.
