Finally, Bangaloreans can look forward to elect their corporators to the council of the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagar Palike (BBMP). The state election commission on Monday announced that the civic polls would be held on February 21.
The announcement is in adherence with a high court direction that had earlier set December 7 as the deadline to announce the date for holding the civic polls.
"The code of conduct will come into effect on January 15 and will remain in force till February 25. The BBMP commissioner Bharat Lal Meena has been directed to issue the notification for the BBMP elections on February 1, 2010. The filing of nominations will begin from the next day," said State election commissioner CR Chikmath.
Bangalore has gone without an elected council for three years and the last civic polls were conducted five years ago.
In preparations for the civic polls, the election commission has for the first time come up with an idea of issuing handbooks for voters to educate them on the working of electronic voting machines (EVMs).
