Metro work to hit traffic

Metro work to hit traffic
Bangalore, Sep 10, DH News Service:

The work on first of the eight underground stations of Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation (BMRC) has got underway.

Trees were first chopped, followed by the relocation of Ajeet aircraft, which was prominent fixture at the Minsk Square.
The Minsk Square will be barricaded for excavation work required for the underground metro station to be located near Chinnaswamy Stadium. This would cause a lot of hardships to road users in the coming days as the Minsk Square is a crucial junction, connecting Bangalore South, East and Central. The work would mean that motorists would have to manage with narrow roads and take alternative.
The other underground stations are proposed at Majestic, City Railway Station, Vidhana Soudha, Central College, Chickpet and KR Market.

The BMRC and the Bangalore Traffic Department are working hand in hand to sync the Metro works and traffic without causing much inconvenience to public.
ACP Nagaappa, Central Division, said that BMRCL has prepared a detailed report about the roads to be followed and the roads which will be narrowed.
“The road width will be reduced to facilitate Metro works for the underground station. Alternative routes are decided and roads inside Cubbon Park will be extensively used to divert the regular movement of vehicles,” Nagappa pointed out.
The area between Bangalore Telecom District Office and the Central Revenue Building and HAL Corporate Office will be cordoned off by October end.
A BMRC official said, “The existing road will be there, but its width will be reduced due to the barricades.

An alternative route to Vidhana Soudha is being worked out. Other roads are not being touched,” he claimed.
Once the Metro works gain steam, those using Cubbon Road and Queen's Road will have to make a detour to proceed towards Chowdiah Road. The traffic from Infantry Road towards South and South-East Bangalore will be diverted to other roads as well.
