Bangalore: One of Asia’s largest universities will now be trifurcated. Bangalore University, which has 598 colleges and over 7 lakh students affiliated to it, will now be broken up into Bangalore University Central (BUC), Bangalore University North (BUN) and Bangalore University South (BUS).
BUC bags the maximum number of colleges (203) followed by BUN (199) and South (196). The state government last year constituted a trifucation committee after the government felt the university found it difficult to oversee academics, administration and examinations.
The nine-member committee headed by former vicechancellor of Gulbarga University N Rudraiah on Friday submitted a report to the government.
The report, a copy of which is available with TOI, suggests that Central College campus be renamed as Bangalore University Central. Colleges of Bangalore Central will come under BUC, which may even be renamed as Bangalore International University as several luminaries are its alumni. The committee also recommended starting five-year integrated courses in areas like nano and smart technology, nuclear science, space science, etc.
COMMITTEE
RECOMMENDATIONS
Three universities should start courses at the same time
Government should improve quality of education
Government should provide resources and financial assistance
Teaching and non-teaching faculty should be provided
BUS can be started at Jnanabharathi campus
BUC can be at Central College and University Visvevaraya College of Engineering
BUN can start in a temporary building
BU employees should be distributed to three universities AREAWISE VARSITIES
Bangalore University South: Magadi, Chennapatna, Kanakapura, Nelamangala taluk and remaining areas above Magadi Road passing through Nayandanahalli, Banashankari, Jayanagar, Indiranagar up to Hosur Road.
Bangalore University North: About 300 acres near Hoskote have been identified for it. Outer Ring Road connecting Tumkur Road, Hebbal-Sarjapur connecting Hosur is the boundary. Areas outside Outer Ring Road, Hoskote, Devanahalli, Whitefield, Varthur, Kolar and Chikkaballapur are in it.
Bangalore University Central: Government Arts College, Government Science College, VHD Institute of Home Science, Maharani College and Government RC College. There’s a request for about 5-10 acres from the erstwhile central prison, as well 20 acres from Bangalore Race Course, Cauvery Guest House and Bangalore Medical College hostel. IS THIS THE RIGHT SOLUTION?
The academic council will discuss the report and suggestions submitted to the government. Each university costs Rs 100 crore. Currently, the teaching faculty is 50% of the sanctioned posts. We’re not able to fill vacant posts due to the recruitment ban. If 50% of faculty are distributed among the new universities, how will we function? Even non-teaching staff is inadequate. If each university has 50 departments, how will we get students? We had suggested one vicechancellor for the university and four zones where each zone can have a registrar (academic), registrar (evaluation) and finance officer for effective administration. Iwelcome the move. During my tenure, we had recommended dividing the university as students were put to hardship. Since no technology was adopted to announce the results soon, we decided to have a separate university, no leasing administration. If there are more than 200 colleges, it’s difficult to manage them. M S Thimmappa | FORMER v-c, BU
