● BBMP CONTINGENCY PLAN READY TO TACKLE MONSOON WOES With monsoons likely to arrive soon, BBMP says it is geared to tackle flooding this time, reports Chandrashekar G.

Like always, Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) is making stop gap arrangements to tackle flooding this monsoon.
The civic body has armed itself with a contingency plan to keep the roads free of water and prevent inconvenience to vehicles and commuters. It claims to have tackled a majority of the 250 points vulnerable to flooding which were identified last year.

“The culvert drains, which are hugely responsible for flooding of the city, have been cleaned everywhere,” say BBMP officers. The city has primary and secondary drains running across 226.88 km within the core BBMP area and over about 100 km in its outskirts.

Puttenahalli, Nayandahalli, Mabeena Nagar, Central Silk Board and Hebbal are some of the points considered vulnerable to flooding and they have been fortified against it, claims a BBMP engineer.

Sand bags and pumps have been kept at hand to attend to emergencies, if any, in low-lying areas of Hebbal, Rachenahalli and Kariyannanapalya.

“Puttenahalli, Central Silk Board, BTM Layout, and Hosur will be free from flooding as the problem has been addressed in these areas,” he says.

“Over 30 encroached structures were demolished to widen the drains and ensure smooth flow of water through them,” the engineer adds.

“The authorities concerned have agreed to build a drain across the national highway at Hosur to prevent flooding at Begur,” he adds.

Critical areas have been taken care of to prevent flooding in the city. Dumping of debris has been prevented to a large extent due to the fencing of drains so that they will not choke when it rains. People who dump debris are being fined. However, there are some areas that need to be addressed which will be done shortly.

S. Subramanya BBMP commissioner Puttenahalli, Central Silk Board, BTM Layout, and Hosur will be free from flooding as the problem has been addressed in these areas. Over 30 encroached structures were demolished to widen the drains and ensure smooth flow of water through them.

BBMP engineer Primary and secondary drains that carry stormwater have to be remodelled and widened to prevent flooding in low-lying areas. Despite taking up remodelling of drains on a war footing, there has been little improvement.

New areas in the city lack proper drains to carry stormwater and this causes flooding.
