TIMES NEWS NETWORK

Bangalore: After a twomonth poll break, chief minister B S Yeddyurappa reconnected with Bangalore on Wednesday. The first thing he did was promise Bangaloreans that the face of the city would undergo a ‘visible’ change in the coming months. He didn’t elaborate. Bangaloreans will now have to wait for the ‘coming months’ to perceive the ‘visible’ change.
After a marathon review meeting with the heads of BBMP, BDA and BWSSB, the CM claimed that development works were not stalled during elections and deadlines were being met.
Several projects announced earlier are being expedited: four government hospitals on the lines of Victoria and Bowring medicare institutes will be built and BDA will identify suitable lands. Construction of the Rs 750 crore-14 grade separators at the ORR junction will begin by June and completed by December 2010.
The deadlines for several road widening and development works: Seshadri Road by May end; Race Course Road, Bellary Road and Palace Road by June end; 1.5 km stretch from Central Silk Board to Hosur Road by mid-July; Hosur-Lashkar Road by Decemberend. About 40 km of RCC Road median has been constructed and another 65 km work is being proposed.
Garbage disposal
The stinking garbage of the city will bring riches to BBMP now. A new garbage disposal system has been put in place where the contractor will buy the solid waste from BBMP. The city will see garbage going organic — the firm will collect the muck, process it and convert it into organic manure. In turn, it will pay BBMP Rs 27 per tonne. This will be experimented in some areas and after sometime, will include the entire city’s garbage of about 3,500 tonnes per day.
WHAT’S IN STORE?
Newly added areas to BBMP are getting civic amenities at a cost of Rs 700 crore; 1,544 works related to roads, underground, power — at a cost of Rs 623 crore drawn up; 695 works in progress to be completed by July. Remaining 645 works to be taken up by May-end.
BDA will spend Rs 800 cr towards infrastructure development during 2009-10.
Work to start on seven sky-walk escalators.
