Take Metro underground: Lalbagh lovers

Take Metro underground: Lalbagh lovers

Residents say that's the only realignment plan they will ok

Vaishalli Chandra. Bangalore

The Metro through Lalbagh works only if it goes underground. This is the solution to the Metro impasse recommended by the area's residents, green activists and Lok Sabha candidates backing the protests against tree-cutting to the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) which, on Sunday, was asked by the state government to stop all work on the stretch till the general elections are over.
The Save Lalbagh protesters did a spot survey among the area's residents for an alternative to BMRCL's decision to chop trees at Lalbagh for its overhead alignment plan. Almost 80 percent of the people surveyed preferred an underground arrangement instead of an overhead line that has claimed five trees on the stretch till now. A total of 23 trees are to be chopped under the current Metro plan. "No activity which destroys the heritage of our city should be taken up. We will have to look for alternate routing or re-alignment (the underground route) so that trees are not damaged," Congress candidate from Bangalore South Krishna Byregowda told DNA.
