Jumping signalsis by far the most common traffic offence in the city.
Nearly 10,000 motorists were caught jumping signals in a special drive conducted by the city traffic police recently.
Additional commissioner of police (traffic) Pravin Sood says curbing signal jumping is a priority for the traffic police.
“This offence is unacceptable. By jumping a signal, the motorist is not only risking his own life but also those of other commuters on the road.
“We intend to come down hard on signal jumping in future,” Mr Sood warns. Traffic experts underline the need for strict enforcement of rules and regulations for better traffic management.
“Once the police starts booking cases against the offenders, signal jumping will fall automatically.
“The police must use cameras and interceptors effectively to ensure that the offenders don’t get away,” says a traffic expert, who feels that if driving licences were confiscated for repeated offences, it will go a long way in preventing people from breaking traffic rules on the roads.
“Now offenders get away by paying a few hundred rupees,” he points out.
“A consolidated effort is required by government agencies to make sure the needs of the traffic department are met to help it organise smooth traffic flow in the city,” the expert adds.
As many as 42,342 cases were booked for all kinds of traffic offences between March 22 and 28 in both east and west traffic divisions and Rs 56 lakh was collected in fines by the police.”
