Here’s some news that may bring relief for Bangaloreans from the scorching heat.
The Meteorological Department has predicted rain in the city for the next two days. Senior meteorologist B Puttanna said, “The rain will bring down the temperature as mercury is expected to dip by two to three degree Celsius. We have observed strong easterlies winds which will carry them to the southern and central part of the state. This will bring the much needed rain to the city.”
The low pressure system has also formed clouding between Sri Lanka and Bay of Bengal. “Since there has been little rain, the temperature has risen drastically this year. The city’s temperature rises above 35 degrees in March. However, this year, it experienced high temperatures since February. This was because of lack of cloud formation. When there is clouding, the temperatures remain low as clouds don’t let the harsh rays of the sun reach the earth’s surface. Since there is little clouding, temperature has risen in the city,” he added.
The highest recorded temperature in the city was 38.8 Celsius on April 30, 1931. With climate change and tree cutting in the name of road widening and pollution, the air conditioned Bangalore city has turned into a furnace, said senior meteorologist, B Puttanna. Bangalore has received as little as 19 millimetres of rain this year. “This year, the rainfall has been very low. Although we expected some showers in March, they were very little,” he said.
