Consider underground plan for other heritage zones'
Some even suggested that the plan should be dumped overall.
The BMRCL, in its argument for the plan, had said that only 0.001 per cent of Lalbagh's green cover would go. Residents, however, refused to buy the argument and organised massive protests after which the state government decided to bury the idea till elections. The green crusaders have got tremendous support from the city.
Not just Lalbagh, citizens have urged the BMRCL to consider the underground plan for places like Avenue Road, in front of Vidhana Soudha, which is another heritage zone.
"If they can't earmark land for more such spaces, they can at least ensure the existing ones aren't mindlessly bulldozed," said Unnathi R, a resident of Double Road.
"The government has no regard for the history and heritage of the city. Lalbagh has been acting as a lung space for the citizens of Bangalore and it has to be protected," said Capt Gopinath, who has been actively supporting the Lalbagh campaigners.
