BBMP had promised to complete the work on the drain in 15 days

People visitingJayanagar’s famed shopping area are lambasting Bruhat Bengaluru Mahangara Palike (BBMP) authorities for their apathy. A long delay in completing a stormwater drain near Kittur Rani Chennamma Stadium in Jayanagar 3rd Block has made life difficult for residents, traders and shoppers who want to reach the Jayanagar commercial complex.
“BBMP has always failed to keep up its word when it comes to completing infrastructure projects, be it big or small,” said Deepak Raheja, a resident of Jayanagar.

For a long time, the faulty drain system here had blocked the flow of water between Jayanagar 4th Block and Jayanagar 9th Block, causing flooding during the monsoon. The drain had not been desilted for over a decade.

When it was proposed, the stormwater drain project came as a relief to residents and traders. BBMP authorities had promised to complete the work in a fortnight, but nearly a month after the work started, it is nowhere near the finishing line.

“We have been having regular talks with BBMP officials and engineers to get the work expedited. What we are getting in return is only lip-sympathy. The work remains undone,” Mr Raheja said.

Speaking to Deccan Chronicle, BBMP engineer Raghavendra Prasad blamed heavy traffic on the road for the delay in the work and said it would be completed within a month.
