September 10, 2010. That’s the day, Reach 1 of Namma Metro Rail project — the 7-km stretch between cricket stadium and Byappanahalli — will be commissioned. Chief minister B S Yeddyurappa has given this commitment to Bangalore. Today, what stands on the stretch is dug-up trenches, several piers and debris. Will it really happen? TOI brings a low-down on the status of the project so far:
REACH 1
Byappanahalli to cricket stadium
Works are in progress on M G Road and foundation works are nearing completion on CMH Road.
The stretch requires 209 piers on which about 1,929 segm-ents have to be launched. The segments are being precast at the casting yard and launching of the segments is in progress. Some 271 segments have been cast.
Once the segments are launched, the BMRC will start laying the tracks, for which tenders have been invited. Since the BMRC has terminated the work contractor for delay, the authorities are in the process of finalizing a new company.
Contracts have been awarded for construction of four elevated Metro stations — S V Road and Ulsoor Stations at a cost of Rs 75.77 crore; CMH Road and Byappanahalli stations at a cost of Rs 92.5 crore. Excavation work for road diversion has commenced on Old Madras Road. The depot works such as embankment work, fixing of reinforced earth panels and erection of boundary wall panels are under way.
REACH 2
Magadi Rd to Mysore Road Terminal
Road widening work for traffic management between Magadi Road and Mysore Road Terminal has been entrusted to Karnataka Land Army Corporation and work is in progress. Demolition of structures and buildings in this Reach are under way.
REACH 3
Swastik to Yeshwantpur
Letter of Award has been issued for the construction of viaduct from Yeshwantpur to Swastik covering a length 5,100 metres excluding station area at a cost of Rs 209 crore. Piling work will commence shortly. Road-widening work of entire reach is entrusted to Karnataka Land Army Corporation. Shifting of utilities has been undertaken.
REACH 4
KR Market to RV Road Terminal
Tender awarded for the design and construction of viaduct at a cost of Rs 150.63 crore. Trial trenching for diversion of utilities of BSNL, BWSSB, Bescom, KPTCL has been completed.
LAND
ACQUISITION
Awards have been passed for Rs 280.39 crore in 295 cases covering 73,493.36 sq mtrs. Possession of 490 properties taken and other acquisitions are in progress
