Green autorick shaws could soon hit roads in the city to help keep it not only pollution free but to also discourage misbehaviour by drivers who will be tracked on monitors from a central control room.

A concept of the Bengaluru Auto Drivers Souharda Cooperative Society, the green autos need the transport department’s approval before they can be rolled out.

Once the service gets the green signal, the autos will be fitted with a Geographical Positioning System (GPS) to allow them to be tracked by the control room the cooperative intends to set up. President of the society R. Somashekar hopes the new system will ensure that drivers don’t harass commuters.

“The service will provide online booking of autos and printed bills. It will cost more than the existing services, but will be cheaper than taxis,” he explains. A minimum fare of Rs 30 will be charged for the first three km and Rs 9 for every km thereafter, he says. Drivers will be required to have passed at least Class VIII and will get a month’s training for the job. “We intend to use 100 autos to begin with and introduce more later depending on the success of the service,” Mr Somashekar adds. Painted green and white, the four-stroke autos have been designed with strong windshields and are environment-friendly. The control room numbers will be finalised after approval by the transport department. The autos will ply between 6 am and 10 pm
