BANGALORE: If a recent industry study is to be believed, Bangalore is one of the most sought after job destinations among ‘Future Workforce’. Delhi and Bombay occupy the other two positions in the study conducted by Assesspeople, a workforce assessment company, among 5,300 Indian respondents covering engineering and non-engineering graduates, post graduates in management and other premier institutions. ‘Future Workforce’ is the term coined by the company, which suggests students employable from the campus.
When asked what clinched it for Bangalore in the study, Arup Varma, professor of Human Resource Management in Loyola University, Chicago, and head of the research team that conducted the survey, said that presence of major brands and “more opportunities” gave Bangalore the edge.
The study drew a contrasting picture between the mindsets of Indians coming from different parts of the country. “While a majority of North and South Indians are image conscious and tend to look at the image of the company, future work force from the eastern and western part of the country look forward to a credible management and compensation respectively.” When asked if there would have been any difference in the study after the revealing of Satyam scam, Arup termed it (the scam) as “an aberration” and was gungho about the credibility of other IT majors like Infosys, Wipro and TCS.
According to the study, the preferred sectors are telecom, IT and financial services.
Arup said that the study was ‘relevant’ considering the sampling was done after the financial crunch set in.
He expressed his pleasure over the fact that despite downturn, the future workforce is preferring the telecom and IT sectors.
